Description
Printed immediately underneath the picture are descriptions in Latin of details in the scene above. Summations of the Latin captions: 150: "The Dacians, under cover of archers, use a ram to try to batter down a city wall. The defending Romans throw spears (broken off from the sculpture) at the attackers. The Dacians were unable to capture the city because they did not have real siege equipment to breach the walls. The ram's head would have been made of bronze." 151: "Roman ships bring supplies to the besieged city. Soldiers are unloading sacks of grain and carrying them inside. The round building in the background is an arena." "Bas relief. Trajan's column, Rome, 113-114 A.D. Engr. early 18th cen.."--written on border.
