Description
Victorious Roman soldiers gloat over their defeated enemies by marching them under a symbolic "yoke" made of spears. This was an added humiliation which symbolized how the defeated warriors had to totally submit to their conquerors. Note the Roman general in the center of the picture with his officers at his side and his legions' standards behind him. Some of the beaten enmy soldiers hide their faces in shame as the Romans put their captured weapons, armor and shields into a pile (at lower left). The Romans first learned about the "yoke" by having it done to them. In the early days of Rome, an army from the neighboring Italian state of Samnium defeated a Roman force (at the battle of the Caudine Forks in 321 B.C.) and made their prisoners march under a low arch of spears like the one shown here as a sign of utter submission. The Romans never forgot this humiliation.
