Description
This picture illustrates an incident from Alexander's campaigns in Asia. In 325 B.C., the Macedonian king was leading his army in an attack on the capital city of the Mallians, a people living along the Indus River. To encourage his soldiers, he climbed over the wall, followed by two bodyguards. The Mallians fought fiercely for their city, and Alexander was so severely wounded in the chest by an arrow that he nearly died. Alexander's men were so outraged by their king's injury that they massacred the inhabitants of the city in revenge.
