Description
The illustration shows Persian scythed chariots charging into a group of enemy infantry. Long, sharp blades protrude from the yoke-pole of the chariot as well as the hubs of its wheels. Enemy troops fire arrows, flee or fall to the blades or under the wheels. Persian cavalry follows the chariots to break through the gap in the enemy's lines these fearsome weapons have made. The clothes of the warriors (trousers and soft Phrygian caps) the Persians are fighting indicate that this is a scene from the days of the creation of the Persian empire, when Cyrus (its first king) was establishing his rule over other peoples in Iran. Scythed chariots were used by the armies of empires in the Near East and Asia Minor, like Persia and Pontus.
