Description
Macedonian war elephants are seen in battle against a Dacian and Sarmatian army. Macedonia is a region to the north of Greece, famous as the home of Alexander the Great. The Dacians lived in what is now Rumania, while the Sarmatians came from what is now eastern Poland and western Russia. During Alexander's march into India, he was impressed by the war elephants used by his opponents. When Alexander's empire was divided after his death, all of its new rulers used elephants in their armies. The picture shows a Macedonian army driving an enemy army into a river. On the Macedonian side, note the Indian drivers (mahouts) guiding the elephants, as well as the soldiers fighting from boxes (howdahs) on the animals' backs. On the Dacian/Sarmatian side, the totally-armored cavalrymen and horses were called "cataphracts". (Note that the artist has even given the horses armor-covered tails.) Ancient generals knew that horses feared the sight and smell of elephants.
