Description
Presenting an unbreakable hedge of spears, a tightly-packed Greek infantry formation called a phalanx impacts a Persian army, throwing it into confusion. The faces and helmets of the Greeks can be seen above their long pikes (called "sarissae"). Archers advance up the hill in the rear, using their bows to skirmish with the enemy and cover the vulnerable flanks of the body of spearmen. The Greeks' banner, with its crossbar and wreath, is an anachronism from Roman times. The artist has managed to show most of the troop types of an ancient Persian army in his scene. Note these from left to right: Both horse and camel cavalry are fighting, the armored horsemen with axes and javelins, the camel riders with bows. Light infantry skirmishers (in the foreground in soft red hats and blue-gray tunics), with javelins, shields and bow-cases/quivers are fleeing. In the center, Persian guardsman called "Immortals" can be seen fighting to hold the line. Their elite status as king's bodyguards is signified by their faceted hats (called "tiaras") and their spears with a golden apple at the butt end. A scythed chariot has lost a wheel (center right) and been abandoned with its horses, and a dead camel lies nearby. An auxiliary infantryman hacks at the Greeks from atop the chariot, while more Immortals vainly strive to hold off the enemy at the far right.
