Description
Roman soldiers storm a Greek city. In the left background, a siege tower has been moved up to the city walls, and a ramp has been lowered from it to let the Romans cross to fight with the defenders. In the left foreground, archers and slingers fire at the defenders (top center), who are fighting back from their walls with arrows, spears and stones. A Roman trumpeter, in his distinctive wolf-skin headdress, sounds the signal for the attack. In the center, Roman soldiers hold up their shields for protection against the defenders' missiles as they fight their way through the wall where the city gate has been battered down. The legion's standard-bearer, wearing a wolf-skin like the trumpeter, leads the way, holding aloft the eagle insignia. At the far right, the city's soldiers are fighting to carry away one of their wounded or dead leaders while, behind them, civilians flee for sanctuary to a temple. On the far left, in the distance, is the Roman besiegers' camp with its wall and tents.
