Description
Raphael's painting shows the battle of the Milvian Bridge near Rome (312 A.D.), where Constantine defeated rival claimant to the throne Maxentius for control of the Roman empire. Maxentius is shown at lower right (on a horse, wearing a crown), where he is about to drown in the river Tiber. This battle was important because it was proclaimed by the Christian Constantine that God had been responsible for the triumph (note the angels over the standards with the crosses at the center of the painting). Some authorities believe that Raphael designed and sketched the plan for this mural, but that it was actually executed by his pupil Giulio Romano.
