Sound quality is fair on streaming audio file 1 (low volume) and good on streaming audio file 2. The recording is marred by some distortion, but the speakers' voices are easily intelligible.
Description
Interview with Miriam Gray conducted by Gwen K. Smith on May 10, 1977 in Normal, Illinois for the oral history project of the National Dance Association, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 31 minutes). Miriam Gray speaks about her background and education, including at the University of Missouri and Columbia University Teachers College; her time in New York City including seeing performances by Mary Wigman, Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Fred and Adele Astaire, and others; her first years as a teacher; her further studies of dance, in Hawaii, and at Columbia University; the many dancers and ground-breaking choreography she saw in performance; the resumption of her teaching career; changes in her students over the years; current trends in dance [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (13 minutes). Miriam Gray continues to speak about current trends in dance including gains and losses in funding and programs; her hopes for the future in dance education.
