Description
Interview with Maria Tallchief conducted by John Gruen on October 1, 1977 in New York, N.Y., as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (Viking Press, New York, 1979). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 48 minutes). John Gruen introduces Maria Tallchief; Tallchief speaks with Gruen about dancing with Erik Bruhn, in Swan lake [in an American Ballet Theatre production] and during his time at New York City Ballet; Bruhn's coaching of her in Birgit Cullberg's Miss Julie; dancing the Flower festival [in Genzano] with Rudolf Nureyev for the Bell Telephone Hour shortly after his defection; dancing in George Balanchine's Swan lake with Bruhn; meeting Nureyev for the first time, in Deauville; introducing him to Bruhn; Margot Fonteyn's invitation to Nureyev to dance in England; Gruen speaks about Balanchine's reluctance to engage dancers considered "stars;" Tallchief speaks about her relationship with Nureyev and with Bruhn; her return to New York City Ballet and why it was not a success; Bruhn's personality; dancing with Bruhn with American Ballet Theatre in the former Soviet Union; Bruhn's career choices [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Maria Tallchief continues to speak with John Gruen about Erik Bruhn and his career choices; her own current work, with the Chicago Lyric Opera; her personal life including her marriage and daughter and her former husband, George Balanchine; her good fortune to have had Bruhn as a partner.
