Description
Interview with Nancy Reynolds conducted by Madeleine Gutman with the participation of others, in 1976, most likely in Greenburgh (N.Y.) where Madeleine Gutman was the head of the Greenburgh's Arts and Culture Committee. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes). Nancy Reynolds speaks with Madeleine Gutman and others about her training in ballet including at the School of American Ballet; joining New York City Ballet, initially as an apprentice; George Balanchine and his many responsibilities at the New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet; the factors leading to her decision to retire from dancing; the life of a dancer including as illustrated by her experiences on tour in Japan and in Australia; the constant physical stress and injuries incurred by almost every dancer [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Nancy Reynolds speaks with Madeleine Gutman and others about ballet dancers as compared with modern dancers including with respect to the length of their respective careers; how she became a dance writer; her upcoming book on the New York City Ballet [entitled: Repertory in review: 40 years of the New York Ballet]; careers relating to dance; the various activities of retired dancers; Balanchine's working methods [ends abruptly].
