Sound quality is fair. The recording is marred by extraneous noise including "tape hiss," and volume is often low. However, Erik Bruhn's voice is easily intelligible.
Description
Interview with Erik Bruhn conducted by John Gruen as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (1979), in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 19, 1977. This is Part 1 of an 18-part series. However, there is no audio for parts 2 and 10, which are available only as edited transcripts. Streaming file 1 (approximately 45 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about his childhood including his first experiences with death; his parents; his sisters; the death of Inge Sand; more on his sisters and mother and his respective relationships with them, as a child and as an adult; his first years at school [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Streaming file 2 (approximately 45 minutes). Erik Bruhn continues to speak with John Gruen about his childhood including his first years at school; Bruhn speaks about his early ballet training and the trauma of his first recital; his time at the Royal Danish Ballet [Kongelige Danske Ballet] school including social aspects; how the dancers have changed, physically, since Flemming Flindt became head of the school; an anecdote about his performing on V-E Day, 1945; visiting London, England and his delight in seeing all types of dance; touring with the Metropolitan Ballet; Sonia Arova including their long friendship; Svetlana Berisova; dancers who inspired him, in particular Jean Babilée; an anecdote about a fan letter he wrote to Katherine Dunham; impressions of other dancers he saw [ends abruptly].
