Sound quality is fair. The voice of the interviewee, Peter Schaufuss, is soft. Also, the recording is marred by extraneous noise including background music, and occasional short gaps.
Description
Interview with Peter Schaufuss conducted by John Gruen on November 17, 1977, in Toronto, Canada, as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (Viking Press, New York, 1979). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). John Gruen introduces the interviewee, Peter Schaufuss; Schaufuss speaks about his time at New York City Ballet including his thoughts on George Balanchine; his decision to leave New York City Ballet including the false reports that he was fired; his decision to join the National Ballet of Canada; upcoming engagements; his awareness, even as a child, of Erik Bruhn; Bruhn's influence on his career including his support; Gruen speaks about Balanchine's declining to be interviewed about Bruhn [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 16 minutes). John Gruen and Peter Schaufuss continue to speak about Erik Bruhn including Schaufuss' friendship with Bruhn and Bruhn's personality; being coached in Coppélia by Bruhn; Henning Kronstamm.
