Description
Interview with Georges Auric conducted by Elena Maroth on July 17, 1979 as background for a documentary on Serge Diaghilev by Frederick J. Maroth. The interview is conducted primarily in French; Frederick Maroth asks the questions in English, Elena Maroth translates the questions into French, and Auric answers in French. A substantial portion of Auric's responses are not translated into English. The location is not identified but may be in France. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 31 minutes) [Begins abruptly, with the end of a conversation between Georges Auric and Elena Maroth, about personal matters; the interview begins shortly thereafter.] Georges Auric speaks about Erik Satie and their friendship; Jean Cocteau and his work for the Ballets russes; the nature of Serge Diaghilev's contribution to the creative processes at the Ballets russes; Auric's collaborations with choreographers of the Ballets russes [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 31 minutes). Georges Auric speaks about the his collaborations with the choreographers of the Ballets russes including George Balanchine and Leonide Massine; artists who designed for the Ballets russes; the composers who were known as Les six [there is a hiatus of about five minutes between the interviewer's posing of the question regarding "Les six" and the response, during which unrelated conversations can be heard].
