Description
Interview with Nadia Nerina conducted by John Gruen on January 24, 1978, in New York City, as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (Viking Press, New York, 1979). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes). Nadia Nerina speaks with John Gruen about Erik Bruhn as the epitome of a classical male dancer; her belief that Sonia Arrova had a significant influence on Bruhn as an artist; her first meeting with Bruhn and their partnership at the Royal Ballet, in 1962; Rudolf Nureyev and his first appearance with Margot Fonteyn; Bruhn as compared to Nureyev with respect to their dancing and their personalities; her belief that Nureyev had a negative effect on Bruhn's perception of himself as a dancer and on his career; Bruhn as a partner; the circumstances that led to Bruhn's being invited to the Royal Ballet as her partner [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 12 minutes). Nadia Nerina continues to speak with John Gruen about the circumstances that led to her and Erik Bruhn's partnership at the Royal Ballet in 1962; Gruen speaks about Maria Tallchief and her introduction of Rudolf Nureyev to Bruhn; Nerina speaks further about Nureyev, in particular his influence on the ballet world and the Royal Ballet.
