Sound quality is good. The recording is marred by mild "tape hiss," but the speakers' voices are clear and easily intelligible.
Description
Interview with Franziska Boas conducted by Marian Horosko in 1969, at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Jerome Robbins Dance Division, in New York City. Streaming file 1 (approximately 31 minutes). Franziska Boas speaks with Marian Horosko about how she first came to study dance with Bird Larson; her own career as a dance teacher; working with Larson at Barnard College and at her studio; more on how she came to study with Larson; Larson's personality and physical appearance; their costumes for class and for performance; Larson's professional background; Larson's movement technique including why it was advanced for its time; Boas's thoughts on Isadora Duncan; the various technical exercises Larson taught; concert performances including a dance, Seasons, based on William Blake's paintings; the splintering off of Larson's students into two groups after her death; studying with Hanya Holm and learning dynamic technique. Franziska Boas speaks with Marian Horosko about differences between Bird Larson's technical exercises and those taught by Hanya Holm; Larson's choreographic methods and her dance Casting out the devils; Mary Wigman and her influence on Larson's use of percussion; modern dance performances Boas saw and classes she took in Europe; her sense that modern dance in the 1940s too often focused on technique to the detriment of content; the incorporation of individual expression in Larson's composition exercises; the group's performances at St. Mark's in the Bowery Church; other exercises, including those influenced by the Stanislavsky method; her belief that Larson would have continued to be a modern dance pioneer had she not died so young; Boas's career after Larson's death including her working with Holm; her thoughts on Humphrey's and (very briefly) Graham's techniques.
