Description
Interview with John Curry conducted by Walter Terry on November 30, 1978 in New York City. A third, unidentified person occasionally contributes a remark. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes). John Curry speaks with Walter Terry about choreographing for ice skating, including his use of its inherent dance potential; his use of the modern dance vocabulary including the body's center as the origin of movement; use of breath; his thoughts on the adaptation of Spanish steps to ice dancing; the spine in ice dancing; adapting Le spectre de la rose for ice dancing; the lack of information about ice skaters and ice skating choreography of the past; adapting The firebird for the ice; creating a full-length production, including the idea of basing it on a fairy tale such as the Snow Queen [Terry speaks briefly about Catherine Littlefield as an ice choreographer]; his idea for a production about King Ludwig II of Bavaria using [Richard] Wagner's music; an anecdote about Martha Graham; lighting and costumes; [Frederick Ashton's] A month in the country [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
