Biographical/historical: Lecture on the Judson Dance Theater and avant-garde dance; recorded on September 30, 1968 in the Auditorium of the Lincoln Center Library and Museum of the Performing Arts, New York (N.Y.) [now the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center]. This was fourth and last in a series of lectures on avant-garde dance sponsored by the New York Public Library's Dance Collection [now the Jerome Robbins Dance Division], and the New York State Council on the Arts. The lecture-series was presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Avant-garde dance.
Venue: Lecture given at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Recorded on September 30, 1968 New York (N.Y.)

Description
Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes). [Begins abruptly.] Following an announcement about the exhibition on avant-garde dance [at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts], Robert Dunn, dance composition teacher and dance librarian, introduces the Reverend Al Carmines and speaks about his background in theology and the arts including music, dance, film, and theater. Reverend Al Carmines, associate minister and director of the arts program at Judson Memorial Church, New York (N.Y.), speaks about the traditional attitude of Christian (in particular Protestant) churches in the United States toward dance; the origins and aesthetics of the Judson Dance Theater; unique aspects of the performances of the early years; the influence of the Judson Dance Theater on the Judson Memorial Church including, in one example, inspiring an innovative Easter celebration; the influence of the Judson Dance Theater on Carmine's musical compositions; some of the songs he has composed [he sings and plays excerpts of some of his compositions including one based on the sayings of Mao Zedong].
