Description
Interview with Donald McKayle conducted by Marian Horosko (approximately 15 minutes) and interview with Douglas (Blair) Turnbaugh conducted by Alvin H. Reiss (approximately nine minutes) for broadcast, probably by radio station WNYC-FM, New York, on its series World of Dance, in 1967. Streaming file (approximately first 15 minutes). Donald McKayle speaks with Marian Horosko about touring with his company (Donald McKayle Dance Company) in Europe with the program Black New World; the program to be performed on January 20 [1968] at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; other activities including choreographing for television; more on the Brooklyn program including Nocturne to music of moon dog and Daughters of the garden; the dancers in his company; choreographing for the theater as compared to choreographing for television including their respective economic aspects. Streaming file (from approximately 16 minutes to 25:37 minutes). Alvin H. Reiss introduces his guest, Douglas Turnbaugh, the executive director of the Dance Notation Bureau; Turnbaugh speaks with Reiss about what notation is; the origins, purpose, and activities of the Dance Notation Bureau; various notation systems; film as an aide but not a substitute for notation; membership in the Bureau [final approximate one minute consists of an extraneous recording].
