[Applause.] Agnes de Mille speaks about her student days at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) including the kind of dance taught at the time; anecdotes about choreographing for the varsity award ceremonies; how she defines living theater; the performer-audience relationship in live theater, in television, and in motion pictures including the direct audience comments in the case of previews; the responsibilities of the live theater audience; American audiences; the influence of the New York arts critics; the effect on the performing arts of the labor unions and their work rules; the intellectual apathy of the American public; the responsibility of students to develop their judgment and discrimination; reads aloud from a work by [Joseph] Conrad; the rewards of artistic appreciation.
