Interview with Helgi Tomasson conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on May 10, 1976 by radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately 54 minutes). [Begins abruptly; music, introduction, and commercial announcements.] John Gruen, host, speaks about the [American Ballet Theatre] gala he just attended at the Metropolitan Opera house, including the premiere of Jerome Robbins' Other dances; John Gruen and Helgi Tomasson speak about George Balanchine's new work Union Jack; Tomasson's background and early career including Erik Bruhn's encouragement and help [a recording of music by Louis Gottschalk used in Balanchine's Tarantella is played]; Tomasson speaks about receiving the Order of the Falcon from Iceland; winning the silver medal at the 1969 International Ballet Competition in Moscow, Russia [former Soviet Union]; his time at the Joffrey Ballet; New York City Ballet including some of his roles; working with Jerome Robbins; Robbins' ballet The dybbuk [a recording of music by Leonard Bernstein used in The dybbuk is played]; his frequent partner Patricia McBride; reasons he enjoys dancing with New York City Ballet [a recording of music by Claude Debussy used in Afternoon of a faun is played; ends abruptly].
