Description
Interview with Louis Falco conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on May 3, 1976 by radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately one hour and three minutes). John Gruen speaks about the awards just presented, to Margot Fonteyn and George Balanchine, and introduces his guest Louis Falco; Falco speaks about his new work Caravan, created for the Alvin Ailey Dance Company [from approximately 8:57 to 13:00, a recording of an excerpt of the music by Duke Ellington used in Caravan is heard]; Falco speaks about his approach to music when choreographing; Gruen introduces and reads an excerpt from Don McDonagh's new book entitled: The complete guide to modern dance (1976) describing Falco's background and work; Falco speaks, briefly, about performing as the friend [Iago] in José Limón's The moor's pavane; working with José Limón; how the José Limón Dance Company has changed since Limón's death; more on dancing in The moor's pavane; the various versions of the role of Iago that have evolved as Limón revised it for different dancers; his own company and its upcoming engagements [from approximately 26:46 to 31:00, a recording of an excerpt of Béla Bartók's Quartet for strings, no. 3, used in Falco's work Argot, can be heard; it is followed by Gruen's identification of the music, which is followed in turn, by commercial announcements]; Gruen speaks about Falco's choreography; Falco speaks about his choreographic process; the various ways in which his life influences his choreography; his style; the question as to whether his work is sometimes misunderstood; how he coaches the dancers performing his work; his impressions when watching other companies' perform [from approximately 48:50 to 55:12, a recording of music by Duke Ellington used in Alvin Ailey's 1976 work entitled Black, brown, and beige, can be heard; commercial announcements and unidentified music follow].
