Description

[Introduction of the program and host, Walter Terry, by unidentified speaker.] Walter Terry introduces Kurt Jooss, who is in New York to supervise the Joffrey City Center Ballet [Joffrey Ballet] production of Jooss's ballet, The green table. Jooss speaks with Terry about the creation of The green table, including its origins: the figure of death, which he envisioned as a role for himself; and the need to create a new work for a choreographic competition [Concours de Chorégraphie en souvenir de Jean Börlin, organized by the Archives Internationales de la Danse]; the process of choreographing The green table, in collaboration with composer Fritz Cohen [Frederic A. Cohen]; the great frequency with which this work has been performed; companies which have The green table in their repertory including the Chilean National Ballet; working with the dancers of the Joffrey Ballet; the variety of dramatic roles in The green table; his use of movement to express dramatic elements; his school in Essen (Germany); his current activities including touring with a small company; Terry's concluding remarks.
