Content: Interview with Helen (Wicks) Reid conducted by Marian Horosko, as host , on March 20, 1969, for broadcast on radio station WBAI-FM, New York on its series Dance New York, on April 14 and 15, 1969.

Streaming file (approximately 31 minutes). [Introductory remarks and playing of recorded music by host, Marian Horosko]. Marian Horosko introduces her guest, Helen [Wicks] Reid, executive secretary of The National Council of Dance Teacher Organizations [now The National Dance Council of America]; Reid speaks with Horosko about the National Council including its structure; the founding of the National Council including its goals of establishing uniform minimum standards and the licensing of teachers; the use of examinations; the National Council's system for recognizing competitions; the early codification of ballroom dances in England and how this has influenced international dance competitions [a brief recording of waltz music is played]; Reid continues to speak about dance competitions including the standards for judging; professional and amateur status [a brief recording of foxtrot music is played]; Reid speaks about the foxtrot and the tango as danced in competitions; the increasing popularity of participation in competitions; the Castles [Irene and Vernon Castle] as having contributed significantly to this popularity [a brief recording of tango music is played]; the fast pace of the international-style tango; practical information regarding participation in ballroom dancing and contacting the National Council [a recording of waltz music is played].
