Description
Interview with Norman McLaren and Ludmilla Chiriaeff conducted by Marian Horosko, as host, at the [Solomon R.] Guggenheim Museum in New York, N.Y., on the occasion of a retrospective of McLaren's films; for broadcast on radio station WBAI-FM, New York on its series Dance New York, on December 17 and 18, 1969. Streaming file (approximately 31 minutes). Marian Horosko, as host, introduces her guests Norman McLaren and Ludmilla Chiriaeff; Norman McLaren speaks about his background briefly; Chiriaeff and McLaren speak about their collaboration on the film Duo (entitled Pas de deux in the United States) including how experiments with the filming of movement led McLaren to consider a ballet film; the developing of the film's scenario; techniques McLaren used to film Duo; the use of specific ballet steps to convey emotions; choreographing for film; the music in the film; influences on McLaren's work including the structure of classical Indian music and the work of other film makers; Chiriaeff speaks about Les Grands Ballets Canadiens including the recent European tour and season in Montréal (Québec).
