Meredith Monk speaks with Marian Horosko about her company, House [House Foundation for the Arts] including the origins of its name; the reasons she prefers to include non-dancers in her company; working with the members of the company; the restrictive aspects of having a company; her vocal composition Blueprint and its relation to her version of The dying swan [a recording of an excerpt of Monk singing Blueprint, performed as she dances the Dying swan (the work entitled: Dying swan with sunglasses?) is played]; Monk's background including her training in the Dalcroze Eurhythmics method and in ballet; her starting to choreograph while a student at Sarah Lawrence College; creating and performing in New York City; performing at Judson [Memorial] Church as distinguished from being part of the Judson Dance Theater group; her building-specific works; works with variable elements; her and Don Preston's composition Candy bullets and moon; [a recording of an excerpt of this work is played, accompanied by Monk's live commentary]; her work as arising, at least in part, from a desire to integrate various elements, including dance and music, into theater.
