[Introductory remarks about Agnes de Mille and her background.] Agnes de Mille speaks about the development of the performing arts and performing arts audiences in the United States; the lack of significant government support for the performing arts in the United States, including as compared with Europe; historical reasons for this lack of support; the development of arts patronage in the United States; the National Council on the Arts; opposition to government aid to the arts; theatrical craft unions; in general terms, the role of the arts with respect to the relationship of the individual to society. [Applause is followed by a question and answer period].
