Interview with Violette Verdy conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on November 14, 1976 by radio station WNCN, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately 55 minutes). John Gruen, host, speaks about the upcoming season of the New York City Ballet and introduces Violette Verdy; Violette Verdy speaks with John Gruen about her appointment as the director of the Paris Opera Ballet [Opéra de Paris Ballet]; the current state of the company and the responsibilities of the position [a recording of music by Maurice Ravel used in George Balanchine's ballet Sonatine is played]; Verdy speaks about her career at the New York City Ballet including Balanchine's choreographing roles that evoked the French qualities of her dancing; her "noble resignation" regarding her body type and technique; Jerome Robbins' working methods compared with Balanchine's; her experience dancing the classic ballets as compatible with her roles at New York City Ballet [a recording of an excerpt of the music by Gabriel Fauré used in Balanchine's ballet Jewels is played]; the early start to her career including her role in the 1949 movie Ballerina; the upcoming New York City Ballet including a Bournonville tribute.
