He appears to be best known today for his works of whimsy. DescriptionA print from Les papillons, ou metamorphoses terrestres des peuples de l'air par Amédée Varin, texte par Eu[gène] Nus et An[tony] Meray, published in Paris by Gabriel de Gonet; originally issued in parts. This print, headed Vertu médicale du boléro, is illustrated with a hand-colored steel engraving by Varin and depicts a female human figure with butterfly wings and antennae. She wears a costume similar to those worn by ballerinas of the period.
