Biographical/historical: Amédée Varin, sometimes called Pierre Amédée Varin, was a French draftsman, painter, and engraver. He appears to be best known today for his works of whimsy. In addition to Les papillons, he also published L'empire des légumes (ca. 1850), a social satire about a world of vegetable people.

Description
A print from Les papillons, ou metamorphoses terrestres des peuples de l'air par Amédée Varin, texte par Eu[gène] Nus et An[tony] Meray, published in Paris by Gabriel de Gonet; originally issued in parts. This print, headed Le triomphe de cypris, is illustrated with a hand-colored steel engraving by Varin and depicts a male human figure with butterfly wings and antennae.
