Description
Memoranda of his conversation at Harlem Apr. 15, 1782, with John Adams, on the subject of peace; Adams, understanding that he was a prisoner, conversed only as to a fellow-citizen and did not communicate the instructions of Congress, but said that the commissioners could not receive propositions for peace until independence was acknowledged; nor could they treat without communicating with France and, after Monday, with Holland also; he laid before Adams the paper from Lord S[helburne] giving an account of Digges's interview with Adams in March; comments of the latter.
