Description
Weather very bad; describes his ride to camp; found matters as before, outposts sending in a few prisoners daily; enemy have drawn their lines closely to the city; a heavy cannonade then in progress; our men had fired on a provision boat in the ditches, killing 9 out of 14; the legislature [of Pennsylvania] had made it death to carry provision into the city [Philadelphia]: reported that unless successful next week, the British would move off; a gentleman from St. Croix reports a letter from Bristol [England] as to French vessels fitted as American privateers having captured 52 West Indiamen in the Channel; restitution was refused by France and Lord Stormont had been recalled; a secret expedition was just starting; as to price of shoes for troops and domestic details.
