Biographical/historical: Fanny Elssler, known for the fire and sensuality she brought to the Romantic ballet of the 1830s-1850s, appears in her signature dance, the cachucha she arranged and performed in Jean Coralli's Le diable boiteux (music, Casimir Gide), first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1836. She danced the cracovienne, another of her famous character dances, in Joseph Mazilier's La gypsy (music, François Benoist, Ambroise Thomas, and Marco Aurelio Marliani) at the Paris Opéra in 1839.
