Description
Depiction of a backstage scene at an opera house, possibly the Paris Opéra. Behind a flat, female members of the corps de ballet line up on a platform, preparing for their entrance. A few flirt with male admirers. Theatrical props, including ewers, spears, and wreaths, are piled in the foreground. Their suggestion of a Roman theme is echoed by the weapons, banner, and helmet visible amid the crowd at left. Audience members in a box and in the balcony appear above the top of the flat.
