Notes
Content: Amymone was a daughter of Neptune (in Greek, Poseidon), while a hydria was a water pot. Lerna was located in that part of Greece known as Argos, and was celebrated as the place where Heracles had slain the nine-headed monster snake called the Hydra. "Ex voto" refers to an offering made by a person to a temple or shrine in gratitude for help or healing received there. Here, the offering is a small figure of a man. A pilaster is a decorative column which does not actually support anything. Salmacis was a hermaphrodite born from a fountain of the same name. A syrinx was a set of pan-pipes.
Content: Written below image: "Neptune crowned with laurel holds his trident ... Amymone with her hydria are [sic] in front of the fountain of Lerne, a Doric edifice ... Water spouts from two lions and an ex voto rests on a pilaster. A hind grazes on a plant. The laurel branches above it indicate the erotic nature of the scene. Beside Salmacis is [sic] a fan, a sphere and flowers. Mercury has his caduceus. Aphrodite holds a mirror and myrtle. Pan beside a tree holds a syrinx."
