Notes
Content: Written on border: "Imperial and Royal Museum, Vienna."
Content: Although the Greek inscriptions identify the figures as Poseidon and Ephialtes, the scene of battle between the two is unlikely given that Ephialtes is a son of Poseidon. In most pottery, Poseidon is depicted slaying the giant Polybotes, in harmony with the familiar story of their epic encounter during the war between the gods and giants (or Gigantomachy). The artist has apparently departed from the traditional telling of the story.
