Notes
Content: Greek names of the deities or persons pictured (in same order as caption): Poseidon, Nike, Theseus, Dionysus, Icarus.
Content: Poseidon holds a trident, Nike has wings, Theseus displays the sinewy arms of a mighty hero, and Dionysus carries a "thyrsus" (staff topped with a pinecone) symbolic of his cult. Amphictyon was traditionally the first man to learn to mix water with wine to keep it from becoming too potent. A "deme" was a district of Athens or its surrounding areas, so this may be a symbolic figure of a citizen. This is a section of a larger painting, only showing some of the persons present at the birth of Minerva (Roman name of Athena, goddess of wisdom).
Content: Written below image: "Birth of Minerva (detail). This plate shows - right to left - Neptune, Victory, Theseus, Bacchus, and Icarus (or Amphictyon, or, Athenian deme).
