Notes
Content: Minerva (called Athena in this Greek painting) sprang fully formed, with weapons and armor, from the forehead of her father Jupiter (Greek Zeus). Jupiter had cried out in pain from a terrible headache and Vulcan (Greek Hephaestus), blacksmith of the gods, had used an axe to split his skull to relieve the pressure within.
Content: Light foxing on image, especially at edges. Written after caption: "British Museum". The Greek artist of this painting has labeled each of the deities depicted.
Source note: Elite des monuments céramographiques : matériaux pour l''histoire des religions et des moeurs de l''antiquité. (Paris : Leleux, 1844-1861) Lenormant, Charles (1802-1859), Author.
