Content: Foxing along center crease and at bottom corners. Second note is based on extensive caption written under image at right.
Content: Io, daughter of a river god and one of Zeus' love interests, was turned into a cow by Zeus when his wife Hera suspected his cheating. Hera asked for the cow as a gift to test her husband. She set Argus, with his many never-sleeping-all-at-once eyes, as guard over Io, but Zeus sent Hermes to slay Argus and set Io free. This painting is a sort of compressed summation of the story.
Content: Io, with the horns and ears of a cow, sits at center, holding a plant stalk. Hermes sits next to her, wearing a winged helmet and sandals . Above Io is Argus, his body covered with eyes. A female figure identified as "Pitho" stands next to him, with winged Pothos seeming to offer help with her belt or girdle. Two satyrs are at the bottom of the scene, one of whom plays with a hare. Aphrodite is second from left, leaning on Zeus' shoulder, with winged Eros by her side. At top center, Hera holds a scepter rod. Ilithyia has her arm around Hera's shoulder.
Content: Pothos is a personification of desire. Ilithyia is a goddess who helped women in childbirth.
