Content: South Kensington Museum, London The following description is in the catalogue of the South Kensington Museum : original carding engine, received 1860. This machine was made by Sir Richard Arkwright about the year 1775 [and] is very similar to the cylindrical carding engine invented and constructed by Daniel Bourne of Leominster in 1748. The object of the machine is to remove from the cotton any fragments of leaves, seeds etc. and also to straighten out the fibers by a combing action ....
