Funding: With support from The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, digitization and DVD authoring of the Works & process at the Guggenheim video archive was done by StreamingCulture at the Graduate Center of The City University of New York.
Biographical/historical: The four sections was commissed by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, which premiered the work in Oct. 1987. Electric counterpoint was commissioned by Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, and debuted in Nov. 1987 at BAM's Next Wave Festival.

Description
This documentary combines interviews and rehearsal sequences with Works & process panel discussion and performance excerpts. Steve Reich discusses the evolution of his music into the orchestal realm, and Nagano provides a conductor's point of view. Selections from the first movement of The four sections are performed. In the second part of the program, Reich and Metheny discuss the composer's work for electric guitar, and Metheny performs improvisations and demonstrates overdubbing by playing excerpts from Electric counterpoint.
