Biographical/historical: Castle Garden in New York City was originally built as a fort to defend New York harbor. Formerly called West Battery and Castle Clinton, it has served many functions, including entertainment center, landing place for immigrants, and aquarium. Jenny Lind, the "Swedish nightingale," gave her first American concert there. In 1950 it was designated a national monument.
