NotesStatement of responsibility: composta per pianoforte da Mat[thias] Strebinger.Statement of responsibility: Lithogr. G. Wegelein, Vienna.Caption title.Numbering: Pl. no. : F. G. 733.Acquisition: Gift; Lillian Moore.Biographical/historical: Scene from Pasquale Borri's comic ballet Redowa und der gefoppte Bräutigam [roughly translated as Redowa and the duped bridegroom] (music, Paolo Giorza and Matthias Strebinger), first presented at the Hoftheater, Vienna, in July 1856. Among the characters were Redowa, danced by Pia Ricci; Karol, danced by Herr Vienna; and Paposki, danced by Herr Frappart. The ballet may have included the dance called the Redowa polka, a popular part of Fanny Cerrito and Arthur Saint-Leon's ballet La vivandière, itself a much-imitated work. Borri had created ballets with similar titles (Katty ossia la vivandiera, Ketty la vivandiera, and simply La vivandiera) beginning in 1851, and probably had some knowledge of the original.
