Biographical/historical: Valse-Fantaisie premiered (as the second section of Glinkiana) on Nov. 23, 1967 with Mimi Paul and John Clifford (New York City Ballet), at New York State Theater; from June 1, 1969, Valse-Fantaisie was performed as a separate work: the other sections of Glinkiana were eliminated.

Mimi Paul and John Clifford discuss the music score for this piece that had already been used for 4-5 dances when this piece was created; speed and stamina issues involved with this choreographic work; the technique of the glissade; the dynamic qualities needed for this work; being told by George Balanchine that his teaching was more important than his choreography due to it changing over the years; Nancy Goldner remembering Mimi Paul's jetés during her solo and the thrust of the front leg; Balanchine teaching Clifford how to jeté properly; and Balanchine asking dancers during the choreographic process if they needed breaks in the choreography to catch their breath.
