Bertram Ross discusses meeting Martha Graham; becoming a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company; how her technique evolved over the years; taking class with Louis Horst and how Horst left the company around the same time Ross joined; how Graham helped Ross become a better performer; partnering with Graham; adapting the choreography of Night Journey to accommodate Ross after Erick Hawkins left the company; Ross' first performance with Graham in Deaths and Entrances; Ross' experiences and stories about performing with Graham; thoughts on Graham and Hawkins' relationship before they broke up; Graham always choreographing to completed music scores and working through each dance before rehearsals began; images and metaphores Graham used when creating works; Graham changing the choreography of works as she became older and more unable to dance the original choreography; the differences in Graham as she aged; stories of Graham being depressed; what happened generally before each performance; Graham losing her temper in rehearsals and often blaming the newest company member; more stories about working with Graham; first seeing Graham perform and how it moved Ross; how he prepared for his role in Appalachian Spring; comparing Seraphic Dialogue and the preacher Saint Michael to Appalachian Spring; how Graham felt about aging; Grahams drinking problem and how it affected rehearsals near the end of her life; Ross becoming co-director of the Martha Graham Dance Company and what happened when Ron Protas took over; and Ross' final thoughts on dancing with Martha Graham.
