The homes and haunts of William Thackeray
Additional title: Walpole house, Chiswick Mall, the original of Miss Pinkerton's academy in "Vanity fair," where Thackeray went to school at the age of six. 28. Wilderness Row (now part of Clerkenwell Road), where he lodged as a Charterhouse boy. Charterhouse dining-hall. He had a great affection for the old foundation, rarely missing attendance on Founder's day. No. 1 Hare Court, Temple, where Thackeray read law in Mr. Taprell's chamber from the autumn of 1831 to May, 1832. No. 2, Brick Court, Temple, where he lodged while he read law in Hare Court. The pictures on this page are by W.J. Roberts. No. 65, Cornhill, where was launched No. 1 of the "Cornhill magazine" in 1859, under Thackeray's editorship. 13. Coram Street, where Thackeray and his wife lived in the early days of their married life--1836 to 1840. Here were written the "Yellowplush papers." 13. Young Street (now 16), where he lived from 1846 to 1853. Here were written "Vanity fair," "Pendennis," "Esmond," and part of "The Newcomes." ; 36. Onslow Square, where he lived from 1854 to 1861. Here he wrote "The Virginians" and "Lovel the widower," and finished "The Newcomes." ; 2. Palace Green, Kennsington, which he built, and where he lived from the spring of 1862 till his death on December 24, 1863.
