DescriptionRudolf Nureyev discusses his defection, his early life and career in Russia, and the wide range of opportunities he has found in the West, allowing him to work with many choreographers and in many styles. He discusses his own choreography, beginning with Tancred (1966) in Vienna, and his attempts to give greater prominence to the male dancer. He describes the making of the film of Don Quixote, which he directed and choreographed for the Australian Ballet. This program is illustrated with performance excerpts from the films I am a dancer (Marguerite and Armand, Field figures), An evening with the Royal Ballet (male variation from Le corsaire pas de deux), and Don Quixote. Also screened are brief clips from a 1961 newsreel, an interview with Clive Barnes, a rehearsal of Rudi Van Dantzig's Monument for a dead boy, and a rehearsal of The nutcracker with Merle Park.
