DescriptionVideo documentation of some of the events surrounding the premiere of Rudolf Nureyev's new version of Marius Petipa's ballet La bayadère. The recording begins with candid footage of offices of the Paris Opéra Ballet and a montage of clippings about Nureyev, then moves on to the Foyer de la danse, where preparations are under way for the post-performance party. Moving backstage, the camera visits the costume shop, then returns to the Opéra's grand staircase to view the arrival of the audience (among them John Taras and Anthony Dowell). The performance itself is fleetingly glimpsed in an excerpt from Act III, scene 1, set in Solor's chamber. Nureyev and members of his creative team (Ninel Kurgapkina, Patrice Bart, Patricia Ruanne, Ezio Frigerio, Franca Squarciapino, and others) join the dancers (headed by Isabelle Guérin, Laurent Hilaire, and Elisabeth Platel) onstage for bows after the performance. After the curtain has been lowered, Nureyev, seated in a gilded chair, receives the decoration of Commander of Arts and Letters from Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture and Education. The recording ends with footage of Nureyev and other guests at the post-performance party.
