Statement of responsibility: Klauber Cath. sc. et exc. A.V.
Biographical/historical: The German engravers Joseph Sebastian Klauber and his brother Johann Baptist Klauber formed a joint publishing firm after about 1740, and generally signed their works with their firm's name Klauber Cath., the "Cath." signifying their religious faith, which inspired most of their subject matter. Their artistic styles are said to be similar and difficult to differentiate.

Extent: 20 x 30 cm.
Description
Scenes from the second book of Maccabees, which describes the history of the Maccabean wars. The numbers on the scenes specify the chapters and verses that they illustrate; information is also provided by the Latin text printed above and below. The large central scene depicts the scourging of Heliodorus, who attempted to seize the Temple's treasury for the king. The elaborate Baroque architecture that provides a backdrop to this scene owes its inspiration more to the stage design of the period than to historical accuracy.
