Title devised by cataloger.
Biographical/historical: This print was based on a painting by Philippe Canot, which was also the basis of an engraving titled Le maitre de danse (1745) by Jacques Philippe Le Bas. A mezzotint version of this image by Thomas Riley, titled The dancing master (ca. 1745-1754), is held by the British Museum.
Biographical/historical: Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld, who may have made this print, was a painter and printmaker who belonged to a German family of artists. According to Grove Art Online, he often produced etchings and lithographs in the "outline" style, including illustrations for Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué's romance Undine.
